Draft Code of Conduct for Members

NE&SF Members Are Advised:

  1. To familiarise themselves with the current highway code as it pertains to horse riders and if possible take the BHS Riding and Road Safety test (*)
  2. To acknowledge and return courtesy from other road users.
  3. To keep away from busy roads where possible
  4. To make sure they can be seen by drivers at all times and in all weather conditions. Wear fluorescent/reflective accessories (**).
  5. Avoid riding in foggy conditions or after dark.
  6. Not to attempt to accustom a green horse to the road without a steady horse present.
  7. To leave details of their route and E.T.A with someone responsible.
  8. To only ride on bridleways, byways, permitted paths, places where they have personal permission to ride or other routes that can be ridden legitimately.
  9. To remember that other ROW users may be frightened of or unused to horses and to act appropriately.
  10. To shut gates behind them and ride slowly past stock.
  11. To ensure a way is clear and wide enough before cantering or galloping.
  12. To bear in mind that horses hooves may damage surfaces in wet weather.
  13. To observe any applicable local byelaws.
  14. Not to ride on cultivated land except where a ROW crosses it. Avoid riding on DEFRA wildlife field margins.

* The BHS Riding and Road Safety Test is available to members

** Hi Vis tabards are available to all members free of charge
